Music Review:
Music - Anu Malik, Mustafa Zahid, Anand Raj Anand, Meet Bros. Anjjan
Lyrics - Kumaar
Shootout At Wadala is a gangster/crime drama based on the first ever registered encounter by the Mumbai Police. As it is set in the 80’s, the composers have tried to recreate that era with the instrumentation but the soundtrack has got its fair share of contemporary music too.
Babli Badmaash Hai is sung by Sunidhi Chauhan and doesn’t leave much of an impression on you because of its dated feel. It is a trumpet, percussion and synth dominated track that sounds more like the background music of a car chase from a yesteryear thriller. Likewise, its remix also doesn’t have much to offer though the techno beats make it sound better than the original.
Next up is Laila which is a spirited and peppy number though dated at times. Mika lends liveliness to the song in his inimitable style and Anand Raj Anand adds some power to it with his brief flourishes. The remix version is sure to become a hit in clubs and bars with its fast paced beats.
Yeh Junoon by Mustafa Zahid is a guitar and percussion based love ballad. The singer might seem a little out of place in the softer parts but excels in the higher ones with his soaring vocals. The song might find favour with the youth due to its lovey dovey lyrics and soulful singing. The remix version reminds you of tracks like Jal’s ‘Woh Lamhe’, Atif Aslam’s ‘Tu Jaane Na’ and the same singer’s ‘Tere Mera Rishta’ in the sense that you can put it on repeat mode and keep listening to it.
Then we have Aale Re Aala sung by Mika and Sunidhi Chauhan. Except the dhol populated ‘Aala Re Aala’ refrain which is its best part, the song doesn’t quite string itself together because of its mismatched arrangement. The remix version is the same albeit with an electronic treatment.
We have Goli next which has been given a rock treatment but as far as the vocals are concerned, it is a bit monotonous with Sudesh Bhonsle, Anil Kapoor and John Abraham singing together only to end up sounding like Amitabh Bachchan. The remix has a little more experimentation with the guitars and percussions, but nothing drastic.
Ek Din Ke Liye by Sunidhi Chauhan is a short musical piece, perhaps an elegy, set to tune to a soulful sarangi.
Aye Manya has a strong drum, guitar and trumpet presence to it and sounds like ‘Jai Maa Kali’ from Karan Arjun in parts. It is sung by Shaan and Adnan Sami in a stressed and stylish manner but hardly manages to keep you engaged for long.
The music of Shootout At Wadala doesn’t have much going for it with most of its tracks failing to stand out for either their composition or vocals. We’ll give it 1.5 stars out of 5.
